Our competitions
Our flagship competition is our ASLM Mock Trial Competition. In this competition, teams from schools across Auckland engage in a challenging but enjoyable debate where they learn to utilise legal thinking.

What is mooting?
Mooting is a competition where students take part in a simulated court proceeding where they present their argument of a legal issue/problem against an opposing counsel and before a ‘judge'. At ASLM, we welcome mooters of all backgrounds and experiences—all Year 9-13 students in Auckland area schools are welcome to participate.
Why mooting?
Auckland Schools Legal Mooting seeks to provide Auckland high school students the opportunity to learn and further develop their debating skills with a stronger focus on legal thinking and argument building. Through this, we aim to foster interest in the study of law and the wider legal profession. Ideally, students will be able to take the skills they will learn through our competitions and use them to achieve greater success in law school, and as critical thinkers.

Our 2025 Competition is generously sponsored by

MERW is proud to support the next generation of lawyers through the Auckland Schools Legal Mooting competition. Mooting is a great way to practise the skills of a lawyer – learning how to present arguments in a compelling way. ASLM run a fun and inclusive programme to help you learn new skills, build confidence and think on your feet. These are great skills to have if you decide to study law, or just love a good debate! We highly recommend giving it a go.
